A Maine sublease agreement is a contract between a tenant and a third party individual to rent a space that is already rented under a primary rental agreement with the property’s landlord. This type of tenancy typically requires express permission from the landlord. Under a sublease, the secondary tenant is liable to the primary tenant. If the secondary tenant violates the sublease agreement in any way, the primary tenant is responsible for all responsibilities that would normally belong to the landlord. It’s advisable to make all secondary tenant applicants complete a rental application before signing a sublease agreement.
