A Vermont standard residential lease agreement is a rental contract with a fixed term between landlords and tenants. The term is commonly one (1) year and contains a predetermined start and end date; renewals are available if and when the landlord agrees to extend. Prior to signing any formal accord, the landlord may request potential renters to undergo background checks to ensure they are eligible tenants when it comes to financial responsibilities and general civil comportment. Landlords can weigh their options if multiple individuals apply for one property, and they reserve the right to deny a tenancy under state and federal law. Once they choose a tenant(s), both parties must sign the lease into effect and commence their duties.
