An Indiana standard residential lease agreement creates a written arrangement between a landlord renting their property and a tenant who shall occupy the space in exchange for monthly payments. In many cases, such leases last one year (12 months) and may not be broken unless an extenuating circumstance arises. Even then, the tenant may face penalties for violating the contract before its maturity date. All parties must fully comprehend their role in the landlord-tenant relationship and carry out the obligations to the best of their ability. Before executing the contract, both parties can negotiate their desired terms and conditions for the tenancy until reaching a mutual accord.
